The ocean remembers you. It always has.

FIELD DEBRIEF — SUBLEVEL CONSTRUCTOR ZONE

I’m recording this while decompression is still running. Hands are shaking. That’s normal, I’m told.

The descent was clean. No resistance. Visibility increased the deeper we went, which shouldn’t be possible. The water wasn’t water anymore—it had structure. Geometry. Coral formations, but not grown—assembled. Recursive lattices, repeating like thoughts you can’t stop finishing once they start. Bioluminescent particulate filled the column. It responded to motion, not light. Every kick rewrote the space around us.

At the base, the structure opened. Not mechanically. Organically. A polyp unfolded and revealed an aperture—mirrored, bone-white, reflective in ways I don’t have language for.It looked back.

There was no sound, but the vibration traveled through my skeleton. I felt it in my teeth first. Then my lungs. Then everywhere at once.
You are pieces of me, sent to find me.

No translation lag. No ambiguity. It wasn’t speaking to us—it was remembering through us.

Breathing became difficult after that. Not because of pressure. Because the air felt borrowed. Like every breath I’d ever taken had been on loan from the ocean.

I understand now why no one returns unchanged.

Returning isn’t extraction.

It’s evolution.

And I don’t think we’re meant to come back at all.
