***...Lily, a twenty-something anarchist living in a ruined city that resembles postwar Berlin—except the city sits on an asteroid, far in humanity’s future. The streets are bombed-out and soot-stained. Buildings decay faster than they can be repaired. The city feels provisional, as if it might be abandoned at any moment. Lily has no memory of a childhood, no personal history, and no clear origin.
Her life is composed of rituals. She meets her girlfriend Lora, her neighbor across the hall, in virtual-reality sex environments that feel safer and more coherent than the physical world. She scavenges scraps of food from her local bodega. She waits for instructions from an unnamed resistance handler who contacts her through coded channels and dead drops. Lily does not question the structure of this life. She believes rebellion gives her purpose, even if she does not fully understand the system she is fighting.
The city is ruled by an authoritarian regime that is never fully visible. Authority manifests through surveillance, procedure, and sudden interventions rather than speeches or ideology. Resistance exists in equal abstraction: anonymous cells, faceless organizers, instructions without explanation. Lily accepts this symmetry. To her, both sides are real enough to die for.
When Lily receives a bomb package in the mail, the mission gives her purpose — until a catastrophic asteroid strike tears through the city, which Lily believes is the bomb fulfilling her mission. For the first time, she believes she has mattered. But, in her virtual reality haven, she is arrested, tried, and sentenced by a remote, faceless tribunal. The punishment, “You Will Face Sentence,” is mysteriously deferred. Undefined. Inevitable.
As Lily attempts to complete her mission, her relationships fracture and the boundary between rebellion and authority begins to dissolve. Watched by an unseen intelligence and caught inside a recursive control system, Lily must decide whether she is shaping her fate—or merely playing a role already written for her.
