Recovered Audio Log

I’m supposed to be logging signal drift, not staring out the porthole like a tourist. But the chatter went quiet thirty seconds ago, and silence has weight up here. It presses.
Two pods just slipped out of shadow—crew-rated, human-built. I recognize the docking geometry instantly. What I don’t recognize is what they’re approaching.
The object outside doesn’t arrive. It’s already there, like it was waiting for the universe to catch up. Smooth, dull metal, no seams. No exhaust. No rotation. It reflects the stars the wrong way, like it’s remembering them instead of seeing them.
The pods align. Magnetic handshake. No hesitation.
I’ve spent two years monitoring noise—solar weather, burst transmissions, dead satellites whispering to no one. All that time we’ve been told there was nothing else to hear. No one else speaking. Just us, shouting into a dark room.
But here it is. Close enough that I can see my own reflection bend across its hull.

The first pod docks. Clean. Gentle.
No alarms. No speeches.
Just the sound of something ancient opening a door we were never meant to forget existed.
